Indefinite Leave to Remain Bolton | ILR Solicitors

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the gateway to permanent settlement in the United Kingdom. As specialist ILR solicitors in Bolton, we guide clients throughout Greater Manchester through every route to settlement, helping them achieve their long-term immigration goals.

What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?

ILR — also known as settlement or permanent residence — grants you the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely, without restrictions on your activities or the need to renew your visa. It is a prerequisite for British citizenship by naturalisation.

Routes to ILR

5-Year Partner/Spouse Route

After completing five years on the UK spouse or partner visa route, you may apply for ILR provided you continue to meet the relationship, financial and English language requirements. See our Spouse Visa page for more details.

5-Year Skilled Worker Route

Workers on a Skilled Worker visa who have been continuously employed with a licensed sponsor for five years may apply for ILR, subject to meeting salary and other requirements. Learn more on our Skilled Worker Visa page.

10-Year Long Residence Route

Applicants who have lived lawfully in the UK for a continuous period of 10 years may apply for ILR under the long residence rules (paragraph 276B of the Immigration Rules), regardless of their visa category.

Private Life Route

Those who have lived in the UK for a significant period and have built a private life here may qualify for leave to remain under paragraph 276ADE of the Immigration Rules, eventually leading to settlement.

The ‘Earned Settlement’ Proposals (2025 White Paper)

The 2025 Immigration White Paper proposes significant changes to settlement rules, including extended qualifying periods and stricter requirements. Our solicitors can advise you on how proposed changes may affect your route to ILR.

What You Need to Apply for ILR

  • Continuous lawful residence for the qualifying period
  • Life in the UK Test pass certificate
  • English language evidence (B1 or B2 CEFR level depending on route)
  • Absences from the UK within permitted limits
  • Good character requirement — no serious criminal convictions

ILR Application Fees

The Home Office fee for an ILR application is currently £2,885 per person (2026 rates). Applications for children and certain other categories carry separate fee levels. There is no immigration health surcharge to pay once ILR is granted.
