The Skilled Worker Visa is the primary route for overseas nationals to come to the UK for work. As specialist immigration solicitors in Bolton, we advise both individual applicants and employers across Greater Manchester on every aspect of the Skilled Worker route.
What is the Skilled Worker Visa?
Introduced as part of the UK’s Points-Based Immigration System in December 2020, the Skilled Worker Visa replaced the former Tier 2 (General) visa. It allows employers to recruit workers from outside the UK for skilled roles, provided certain conditions are met.
Eligibility Requirements
Sponsor Requirement
The applicant must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence. The employer must issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) which the applicant uses in their visa application.
Skill Level
Since changes in 2025 under the Immigration White Paper, only roles at RQF Level 6 (degree level) and above are eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route. Medium-skilled roles at RQF Levels 3–5 were largely removed from eligibility, except where the Migration Advisory Committee has made specific recommendations.
Salary Threshold
As of April 2025, the general salary threshold is £38,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. There are lower thresholds for certain shortage occupations and for new entrants to the labour market.
English Language Requirement
Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at CEFR level B1 or above, via an approved SELT or relevant academic qualification.
The Application Process
Applications are submitted online via the UKVI portal. Processing typically takes 3–8 weeks for applications from outside the UK. The visa is granted for up to 5 years initially and can be extended. After 5 years of continuous qualifying employment, the holder may apply for ILR.
Health and Care Worker Visa
Workers in eligible healthcare roles can apply via the Health and Care Worker Visa, a subset of the Skilled Worker route that benefits from reduced visa fees and priority processing.
