Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and eVisa: What You Need to Know 2026
The Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) was the main evidence of immigration status in the UK for over a decade. In 2025, the transition to the digital eVisa system was completed. Our Bolton immigration solicitors explain what this means for visa holders.
What Was the BRP?
The BRP is a credit-card-sized identity document issued to most non-EEA nationals granted leave to remain in the UK for more than 6 months. It contains the holder’s biometric information (photograph and fingerprints) and details of their immigration leave.
The Switch to eVisa
From 1 January 2025, most BRPs have been replaced by eVisas — digital records of immigration status held in the Home Office’s systems. Existing BRP holders needed to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their digital status. The eVisa can be shared with employers, landlords and other authorities via an online share code.
Why eVisa Matters for Employers and Landlords
Employers conducting right-to-work checks and landlords conducting right-to-rent checks must now use the online checking service for most migrants, rather than relying on physical BRP cards. A BRP past its expiry date is no longer valid evidence of status — even if the underlying leave has not expired.
Issues with the eVisa Transition
The transition to eVisa has not been without problems. Many people had difficulties creating accounts, and some found their status was not correctly reflected in the system. Our solicitors have helped clients resolve eVisa account issues and discrepancies with UKVI.
Travel on an eVisa
eVisa holders need to ensure their UK Visas account is linked to their current passport. If you travel on a new passport that is not linked to your eVisa, you may face difficulties at the UK border. Updating your account when you renew your passport is essential.
