Innovator Founder Visa UK: Requirements & Application 2026

The Innovator Founder Visa replaced the Innovator Visa and Start-up Visa in April 2023. It is designed for experienced entrepreneurs who want to set up or run an innovative, scalable business in the UK. Our immigration solicitors explain the requirements.

Key Requirements

To qualify, you must: have an innovative, viable and scalable business idea (or existing business) that is endorsed by an approved endorsing body, meet the English language requirement (B2 CEFR), and have at least £50,000 in investment funds available (though this requirement may be waived in certain circumstances). There is no minimum salary threshold.

The Endorsement Process

Before applying for the visa, you must obtain an endorsement letter from a UKVI-approved endorsing body — typically a university business incubator or seed funding organisation. The endorsing body assesses whether your business idea is genuinely innovative, scalable and viable. Competition for endorsements is fierce.

Settlement via the Innovator Founder Route

After 3 years on the Innovator Founder Visa (with at least one re-endorsement), you may apply for ILR if your business has achieved specified milestones, such as securing investment, generating significant revenue, creating jobs or filing patents. Unlike most routes, there is no fixed qualifying salary threshold for settlement.

Business Activities Permitted

You can set up a new business or join an existing one as a director or shareholder. You can also take on supplementary employment of up to 20 hours per week in addition to your primary business activities.
