UK Student Visa: Complete Application Guide 2026
The UK Student Visa is the gateway for international students to study at UK universities, colleges and schools. Our student visa solicitors in Bolton explain how the process works in 2026.
What is the UK Student Visa?
The Student Visa (which replaced the Tier 4 General Student visa in 2021) allows nationals from non-visa-exempt countries to study full-time courses in the UK at institutions holding a UKVI student sponsor licence. Courses must be at RQF Level 3 (A-level equivalent) or above and last longer than 6 months.
Getting Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Before you can apply, your institution must issue you a CAS — a unique 14-character reference number that links your application to your course details. Your CAS contains information about your course start date, length, fees and your institution’s sponsor licence number.
Financial Requirements
You must show you have sufficient funds to cover your course fees and living costs. You must have held the required funds in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application. The required amount depends on your fees and whether you are studying in London or outside London.
English Language Requirements
Most applicants must prove English at CEFR B2 (for degree-level courses). Approved tests include IELTS for UKVI, Trinity ISE and others. If you completed your previous qualification in English, you may be exempt.
After Your Studies: The Graduate Visa
After completing a degree-level or above course at a licensed UK university or higher education provider, you may be eligible for the Graduate Visa. This allows you to work (or look for work) in the UK for 2 years without a sponsor (3 years for PhD graduates). This is an important stepping stone toward a Skilled Worker visa.
Dependants
Student visa holders studying at degree level (and whose course is 12 months or more) may bring dependants only if they are a government-sponsored student or are postgraduate students. The rules on student dependants have been significantly tightened since 2024.
