British Citizenship by Naturalisation: Requirements & Process 2026

Naturalisation as a British citizen is one of the most significant legal steps an immigrant can take. Our British citizenship solicitors in Bolton explain the requirements and process in this 2026 guide.

Eligibility Requirements for Naturalisation

To apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, you must:

  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), EU settled status, or right of abode
  • Have been continuously resident in the UK for 5 years (or 3 years if married to a British citizen)
  • Have not been absent for more than 450 days in the 5-year period, nor more than 90 days in the 12 months before application
  • Pass the Life in the UK Test
  • Demonstrate English language at CEFR B1 level
  • Be of good character — no serious criminal convictions, no immigration offences

Applying as a Spouse of a British Citizen

If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you only need 3 years of residence, and the absence allowance in the final 12 months is increased to 270 days. You still need ILR (or settled status) and must meet the other requirements.

The Life in the UK Test

The test comprises 24 questions drawn from the official handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. You must score 75% (18 correct answers) to pass. The test is taken at one of over 60 approved test centres across the UK, including centres in Greater Manchester accessible to Bolton residents.

The Application Form AN

Naturalisation applications are made on form AN and submitted online. You must upload supporting documents including identity documents, proof of ILR, Life in the UK Test pass certificate, English language evidence and evidence of residence (e.g. P60s, tax returns, tenancy agreements, utility bills).

Citizenship Ceremony

Successful applicants are invited to attend a citizenship ceremony, usually held at the local council offices. At the ceremony, you will take an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Crown and receive a certificate of naturalisation. You can then apply for a British passport.

Dual Nationality

The UK permits dual citizenship. However, not all countries allow their nationals to hold dual citizenship — you should check whether your home country allows this before applying.
