UK Graduate Visa: Work in Britain After Your Studies
The Graduate Visa is one of the most valuable immigration innovations introduced with the Points-Based System. It allows international students who have completed a UK degree to live and work in the UK for 2 years (or 3 years for PhD graduates) without needing a sponsor. Our immigration solicitors explain the route.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Graduate Visa, you must: have a valid Student Visa at the time of application, have completed a degree-level course (RQF Level 6 or above) at a licensed UK Higher Education Provider that holds a track record of compliance, apply from inside the UK, and not have previously been granted a Graduate Visa.
Benefits of the Graduate Visa
- No sponsor required — work for any employer, be self-employed, or look for work
- 2 years’ leave (3 years for PhD graduates)
- No restriction on type of work
- Family members can join on dependant visas
- Can switch into the Skilled Worker route from inside the UK if you secure eligible employment
Can the Graduate Visa Lead to Settlement?
The Graduate Visa cannot directly lead to settlement — it does not count as qualifying residence for ILR on its own. However, time spent on the Graduate Visa can count toward the 10-year long residence route. More commonly, Graduate Visa holders secure skilled employment and then switch to the Skilled Worker Visa, which does lead to ILR after 5 years.
Applying for the Graduate Visa
Applications are made online via the UKVI portal. You must apply before your current Student Visa expires. The fee is currently £700. Processing is typically within 8 weeks, with priority services available.
